Missing a tax deadline is one of the most expensive — and most avoidable — mistakes a taxpayer can make. Penalties and interest add up fast, and they're entirely preventable with a little planning. Here are the dates every Albertan should have on the calendar for the 2025 tax year (the return you file in 2026).
The big one: April 30, 2026
For most individuals, your 2025 income tax return is due April 30, 2026, and any balance you owe must be paid by that date too. File late with a balance owing and the CRA charges a 5% penalty on the balance, plus 1% per month the return is late — on top of compound daily interest. Even if you can't pay in full, file on time to avoid the late‑filing penalty.
Tip: If April 30 falls on a weekend, the CRA considers your return on time if it's received or postmarked by the next business day.
Self‑employed? You get until June 15
If you or your spouse/common‑law partner are self‑employed, your filing deadline extends to June 15, 2026. Important catch: any tax you owe is still due April 30. So the later filing date helps with paperwork, not payment — interest starts accruing on an unpaid balance from May 1.
RRSP contribution cut‑off
To deduct an RRSP contribution on your 2025 return, you generally need to contribute within the first 60 days of 2026 — the deadline lands at the start of March 2026. Contributions made in this window can be applied against your 2025 income, often nudging you into a lower bracket.
Quarterly instalments
If you owe more than $3,000 in net tax two years in a row, the CRA may ask you to pay by quarterly instalments, typically due March 15, June 15, September 15 and December 15. This is common for self‑employed Albertans, retirees with investment income, and anyone without enough tax withheld at source.
Deadline cheat sheet
| Date | What's due |
|---|---|
| Early March 2026 | RRSP contribution deadline (for 2025 deduction) |
| March 15, 2026 | First quarterly instalment |
| April 30, 2026 | Personal return filed + balance paid |
| June 15, 2026 | Self‑employed return filed (balance still due Apr 30) |
| Jun / Sep / Dec 15 | Remaining quarterly instalments |
